Woodburning Animal Eyes

Creative techniques to portray soulful eyes

By Aline Hoffman

When you’re doing a portrait, there is nothing more important than the eyes. The essence of life and expression are in the eyes. This is true whether the portrait is carved, painted, or woodburned, and whether the subject is human or animal. Without the soul reflected within the eyes, the work will exist without life, no matter how perfect the rest of the piece may be.
